Fractures of lower limb are often {compound} because of proximity of bones to skin. Fractures of {fibula} are usually simple & can often be treated by strapping. Damage to bones in lower limb are usually caused by direct blows or by {torsion}. Horizontal breaks in {tibia} are usually stable & can be treated by plaster splint.

Spiral fractures are unstable. Signs are similar to other fractures. TREATMENT:

cover any open wound with clean well-padded dressing
use wooden splints to immobilize leg
transfer to hospital
